Call for proposals Science with and for society - Participatory research 2 second edition

Today's societal and environmental challenges raise questions that go well beyond the research community alone, since they directly concern all citizens. However, citizens have not waited for the major transitions we are facing to get involved with scientists in the production of knowledge that can be used for action and can play a concrete transformative role. This "participatory science and research" movement, based on the cross-fertilisation of knowledge (scientific, action-based and experiential), is now characterised by a huge variety of approaches, disciplines, themes, players and aims. Since the pioneering "science shops", the landscape of participatory science has continued to be enriched by new players and new structures (living labs, open labs, fab labs, hacker spaces, tech shops, foundaries, third places, etc.), and funding mechanisms, direct or indirect, national or regional, have also multiplied, although without meeting all the needs.

This is why the ANR, keen to contribute to the development and structuring of participatory research and aware of the diversity of expectations, has programmed two complementary and successive calls for projects in 2022 and 2023, which aim to cover this field to its maximum extent:

  • They are based on the broad definition of participatory science and research that has been the consensus in France since 2017, as "forms of scientific knowledge production in which civil society actors participate, along with researchers, on an individual or collective basis, in an active and deliberate way".

  • They are open to all academic disciplines and to all scientific questions relating to societal issues and geared towards finding solutions. While the health, life and environmental sciences were the first to get involved in the participatory science movement, all fields of scientific research are now concerned.

  • They are aimed at two main types of project, with different levels of maturity.

The "Participatory Research 1" call for proposals, published in July 2022, was designed to support the development of projects by groups already formed around a scientific problem jointly developed by academic and non-academic players, and which addressed societal issues. Maximum funding was €250k per project over a period of up to two years.

Like the previous call, open in 2023 (SAPS-RA-RP2-23), this "Participatory Research 2, 2nd edition" call aims to support the maturation of emerging projects over a period of 12 to 18 months, with maximum funding of €100k per project.
