Preannouncement: two Euro-Mediterranean calls for proposals to be launched shortly

In order to develop research between Mediterranean countries, ANR is underpinning the French public and private research policy by supporting French teams wishing to develop partnerships with countries of the southern and eastern banks of the Mediterranean Sea. As of this Autumn, ANR will thus be publishing two international calls for proposals along with its European and Mediterranean partners. These calls will be launched under the ARIMNET 2 and ERANETMED initiatives.

The Mediterranean is the only region in the world for which ANR has introduced specific programme planning, characterised by strong determination to encourage interdisciplinary research and systemic approaches. In order to respond as effectively as possible to the challenges in this rich, complex and contrasted region of the world, ANR is participating in the co-construction of a Euro-Mediterranean research area. It is in this context that ANR is a member of the ARIMNET 2 and ERANETMED ERA-NETs in which it assumes co-responsibility for the calls for proposals with Morocco and Egypt respectively.

An ERA-NET is a network of funding agencies and research organisations supported by the European Commission that serves as an instrument for developing and enhancing the coordination of national research programmes. The network partners materialise their actions by regularly launching international calls for proposals on targeted themes in which each partner funds the researchers from its own country.

ARIMNET 2 – Coordinating agricultural research in the Mediterranean region

The aim of ARIMNET is to promote synergies and encourage cooperation between Mediterranean countries in the field of agricultural research. ANR participated in the network's first call launched in 2012 and thus co-funded nine projects bringing together researchers from the north and south banks of the Mediterranean Sea.

This second call will concern three themes in particular:

  • Development of sustainable food production in a context of ecological and climatic stress
  • Optimisation of the food chain from production to consumption, enhancing the advantages of Mediterranean food
  • Sustainable management of landscape and resources used by agriculture

It will open on 15th September 2014 and run in two stages. The deadline for pre-proposal submission will be 30th November 2014.

ERANETMED – Facilitating Euro-Mediterranean cooperation through joint cross-cutting activities

ERANETMED is a pluridisciplinary Euro-Mediterranean programme dedicated specifically to the coordination of research in the Mediterranean region. It was launched in October 2013 and is coordinated by Italy.

This first call will cover three themes:

  • Renewable energies and energy efficiency
  • Water resources management
  • Integrated research to maximise energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies combined with efficient management of conventional and nonconventional water resources. It is expected that socio-economic, cultural and geographic approaches and methods of governance will be addressed.

It will open on 1st November 2014 and run in a single stage with the planned closing date being 31st January 2015.

Projects conducted by Euro-Mediterranean consortia are expected

For both calls for proposals the projects must include teams from at least three countries participating in the call, including one team from the European Union and one team from a non-EU Mediterranean country.

The following countries will participate in the two calls for proposals: Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey.

Croatia, Israel, Morocco and Slovenia will only take part in the ARIMNET 2 call, while Germany, Jordan and Lebanon will only participate in the ERANETMED call.
