Pre-announcement: Intersectoral research call in the maritime sector between the ANR and the FRQ

The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) and the French National Research Agency (ANR) will launch an intersectoral research call between France and Quebec on the maritime sector in January 2019. The call will fund teams of researchers from France and Québec.

French and Quebec governments want to improve knowledge and good practices for the management of maritime areas, in the light of human and natural pressures that apply to these. This priority has been strengthened by the importance given to the implementation of the Comprehensive economic and trade agreement (CETA). The governments are aware of the challenges related to sustainable and smart maritime transport, and to the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

In this context, ANR and FRQ will launch a joint research call. The overall goal is to improve the understanding of the combined impacts of natural ocean variability and human activities, such as those related to maritime transport, on the sustainability of the continuum ocean-coastal zones-river and the related socio-economic services.

Projects have to be interdisciplinary, inter-sectorial and/or transdisciplinary. Researchers are strongly encouraged to develop public-private partnerships and/or to involve any societal actors (e.g. local communities, conservation NGOs, fisheries) in their consortium.

Applications will have to be jointly led by a French and a Quebec coordinator. Applications will be reviewed by both ANR and FRQ. For indication only, the maximum funding per project will be of 360 k€ for French partners, and 600 kCAD$ for Quebec partners, for a maximum of 3 years.

This call is likely to open on the second half of January 2019. The submission deadline will be mid-May 2019.
