CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR BREAKTHROUGHS IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE FOR NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES – FAHAM
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a major health challenge in Europe, accounting for 91% of deaths. La Réunion is
particularly affected with a notably high incidence of NCDs such as diabetes and lower 5-year survival rates for cancer. Many cancer
patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, underscoring the need for early diagnosis and treatment. Nuclear Medicine emerges as a
promising solution for beating cancer, with the EU prioritizing equitable access to radioisotope therapy offering less invasive
treatment. However, the limited focus on clinical trials, fragmented research initiatives, and minimal private sector involvement
hinder regional progress.
To tackle these issues, FAHAM aims to transform CYROI into a leading Centre of Excellence in Nuclear Medicine Science, emphasizing
ultra-early diagnosis through molecular imaging and innovative therapies, ultimately reducing reliance on invasive treatments. By
teaming up with the University Hospital of La Réunion and collaborating with advanced EU institutions (Ghent University, Institut
Curie), the project aims to strengthen Excellence in Translational Nuclear Medicine research, bridging Smart Specialization Strategy
RIS3 priorities with expertise for research Excellence, attracting talent, and securing La Réunion’s competitiveness and its position in
the European Research Area.
FAHAM will provide an ideal framework for conducting unprecedented clinical trials and data-driven analysis, positioning La Réunion
as a pioneer for NCDs experimentation and innovation. By fostering Excellence in Research & Innovation and connecting academic
and private health stakeholders, the CoE will drive knowledge exchange, develop technology transfer and establish new business
opportunities. The CoE will enhance Nuclear Medicine Science and healthcare outcomes regionally and worldwide, serving as a
European lighthouse for low-income countries and creating a competitive biomedical hub in the Indian Ocean region.
