AdvanCed CaLcium radioActive Isotope Manipulation for MORA – ACCLAIM_MORA
Why are we living in a world made of matter?
The “Matter’s Origin from RadioActivity” (MORA) experiment is looking for answers. CP violation is one of the three famous Sakharov conditions needed for explaining the matter – antimatter imbalance observed in the Universe. The measurement of the D correlation in the decay of trapped, and laser polarized 23Mg+ and 39Ca+ ions, as proposed in the frame of MORA, complements the search for Electric Dipole Moments to look for new interactions, which can explain the imbalance. The MORA experiment is using a novel polarization technique, which combines the high efficiency of ion trapping with the one of laser orientation. It is currently taking data using 23Mg+ beams delivered by the IGISOL facility, at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. 39Ca+ is a unique candidate with exceptional potentials to complement the measurement of the D correlation in the decay of 23Mg+ with MORA. Compared to 23Mg+, 39Ca+ presents assets for significantly higher sensitivity measurements, both at short term at Jyväskylä and at longer term, at GANIL, Caen, where MORA is expected to move when the DESIR facility, will become operational (2029- …):
Despite these advantages, technical challenges have been so far limiting the perspectives of 39Ca+ for MORA. These are these challenges that the ACCLAIM ANR project aims at tackling, by developing techniques of manipulations of the 39Ca+ isotopes, to perform measurement of higher sensitivity to New Physics at IGISOL and then at DESIR. These innovative techniques concern the production, purification, cooling and bunching, and the precise control of the polarization of the 39Ca+ ions confined in the trap of MORA.
The ACCLAIM project brings together experts in radioactive ion beam production and manipulation, as well as specialists of precision tests of the Standard Model using nuclear beta decay from GANIL, LPC Caen, university of Jyväskylä (Finland) - KU Leuven (Belgium).
