Fostering Understanding of algorithm TrUst to Reduce aversion through Emotional and external advices influences – FUTURE

Submission summary

Advancements in artificial intelligence and new technologies is leading to the increasing integration of algorithms (i.e., decision support systems) into production systems. However, despite their benefits, a key observation remains: some individuals are reluctant to use the decision support systems (DSSs) or their recommendations, which can result in serious consequences for the production system (e.g., rigidity, delays, significant additional costs) and for the individuals’ working conditions (e.g., increase in cognitive load and stress). The FUTURE project, by adopting a multidisciplinary approach (i.e., computer science, ergonomics, psychology, Human-Machine interactions), aims to provide a deep understanding of the factors and mechanisms underlying AA in the context of the industry and the factory of the future. Such understanding will enable us to develop interventions for professionals responsible for production line planning, improving the use of DSS and their recommendations and, thus, enhancing the productivity while reducing individuals’ cognitive load and stress. Particularly, the FUTURE project will focus particularly on the influence of incidental emotions and external advices as levers to increase individuals’ trust in algorithms, which in return should reduce their algorithm aversion (i.e., increasing their acceptance of DSSs and their recommendations.
