Ambition Dialogue REsearch Science Society 2021 Rhône Auvergne – ADESS-2021-DR07
There are many issues that give rise to divergent opinions in our society, due to their political, moral, economic or cultural implications. The result is controversial societal debates that can include topics such as climate change, public health, new technologies, gender and identity issues, to name but a few. These various upsets underline society's vulnerability to a flood of contradictory information massively relayed on social networks. These intense debates show that society is demanding a better understanding of the role of science in the decisions taken by all economic and political players, and that those involved in research need to promote a better understanding of scientific method and debate. It is now the duty of the scientific community to respond to this call, on pain of a total breach of trust.
The new French research programming law (2020) has sought to strengthen interactions between science, research and society. In this context, the French National Research Agency (ANR) is proposing a multi-year program of calls for projects to promote Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture (STIC), mediation and participatory science in society.
Through its proposed actions, the CNRS aims to show citizens the value of scientific data, so that the knowledge generated by laboratories is given due consideration in societal and individual choices. Aware that fundamental research involves advanced and sometimes abstract concepts, and that the results of this work need to be placed in a "narrative" that goes beyond them and encompasses them, the CNRS, in the mediation actions it proposes, aims to help decipher them. This angle of mediation, combining editorial devices and event-based actions, makes it possible to tackle, among other things, the phenomena of fake-news, the impact of scientific alerts, but also the controversies and debates that fuel the dialogue between science, research and society.
By responding to the call for projects Science with and for society - Scientific, technical and industrial culture - AAPG2021, the Rhône Auvergne delegation wishes to continue proposing innovative initiatives aimed at strengthening interactions between science, research and society in its territories and for the benefit of all. Focused on promoting an open and accessible scientific culture, this response is based on interdisciplinary projects that encourage dialogue between scientists and citizens. Through innovative outreach activities, we aim to raise public awareness of contemporary scientific issues, while encouraging citizen involvement in research. Our ambition is to actively contribute to the development of an inclusive and collaborative scientific culture, reflecting the values of sharing and curiosity that characterize research in our region.
