Sorbent based processes for highly efficient and compact CO2 capture technologies – SHEETS
The overall objective of the SHEETS project is to develop cheap and scalable sheet-shaped sorbent modules for CO2 capture processes having optimal volumetric sorption capacities and fast sorption kinetics giving CO2 purities above 95% and capture rates above 90% using sorption/desorption cycle times below 2 minutes for end-of-pipe/post-combustion contexts to assure a reasonable footprint of the process.
This will be reached by working on the following subobjectives:
1) understanding the main factors that determine the final properties and performance of the sheet-shaped sorbent,
2) demonstrating the performance of the sheet-shaped sorbents in at least two process configurations at TRL5,
3) developing simulation tools that can be used to further develop the processes for use in other contexts with different feed gas compositions, and
4) carrying out full life-cycle -, techno-economic -, and social-impact analyses of the developed sheet-shaped sorbent-based technologies.
The technologies developed will be applicable to various processes from low CO2 concentrations in Direct Air Capture (DAC) and industrial point-sources with low CO2 concentrations to higher CO2 concentrations in post-combustion and other end-of-pipe processes. SHEETS will demonstrate the CO2 capture technologies developed at TRL5 level for both post-combustion and for DAC/low industrial CO2 concentrations.
The SHEETs project is very relevant to the call since the project aims at developing cost and energy efficient, compact CO2 capture technologies, contributing to the CCUS deployment, and thereby accelerating the clean energy transition by contributing to significant CO2 reduction by 2030 and the climate neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, SHEETS aims to evaluate the value chain of CCUS through technical and economic analysis and societal and environmental life cycle impact assessment.
