discoverAbility and investiGation in spAtial iconograPhic hEritage – AGAPE

Submission summary

Revealing the hidden treasures of a place, building a bridge between its past and present days, visualizing its evolution: this is the vision of AGAPE. With the acceleration of open data policies promoting the circulation of public data, and the proliferation of information on the Internet, it is now possible to access multiple multimedia contents related to cultural and natural heritage that describe this place. AGAPE will focus on visual-based documents of all types (from iconography to 3D point clouds, including textual descriptions), which are inclusive and powerful analysis and communication vectors, for which scientific barriers are still numerous. Its first objective is to conduct innovative research on the multimodal analysis, linking and confrontation of such a constellation of contents, for facilitating their structuring, restitution and understanding, including verifying their coherence (especially facing social networks and generative AI) with multi-source and reference resources. Then the second objective of the project is to integrate the data structured and enriched in a 3D environment allowing to showcase them in their spatial context, by proposing novel paradigms of visualization, navigation and interaction in order to foster their discoverability, engagement and exploitation. Alongside initiatives targeting specific data and terrains with dedicated tools, AGAPE will capitalize on these objectives by breaking new ground through the setting up of an open source, interoperable and reproducible framework of multi-source data and tools encapsulated in a digital twin dedicated to heritage, designed to provide novel insights to experts and citizens on a place and its facets. This replica will be exploited for several investigations in SSH and Media, with archivists for the coherence and enrichment of collections, historians for the study of substandard housing, and journalists for engagement of the general public with heritage in the television media.
