Participation of trans people, doctors and sociologists to build common knowledge and protocols on gender transitions – AMPARTRANS

Since 1992, associations of trans people and decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) have led to changes in the way sex changes are recorded in France's civil registry. Despite recent recommendations, there are few studies on transidentity in France. In order to avoid the separation between lay and medical knowledge, we are proposing a participatory research approach supported by a sociology laboratory and an association of transgender people. It will be co-constructed by stakeholders (trans people and associations, hospital and private healthcare professionals, sociologists) from two heterogeneous regions (Grand-Est and Bourgogne Franche-Comté) in terms of transitions care provision and associative fabric, both bordering and neighboring. It will produce two territorial portraits focusing on medical transition pathways, and compare them in order to: 1) highlight the territorial diversities in the provision of gender transition pathways; 2) apprehend the construction of locally situated knowledge and know-how in their exchanges with national and international associative and professional networks; 3) form a perennial consortium to co-construct future research. 13 collective work sessions will enable us to co-write a shared research project to be submitted to various calls for projects.
