Statistical Surveys and Repeated Tests to Analyse Discrimination in Higher Education – ESTRADES

While the academic literature on discrimination covers a growing number of criteria and fields, higher education remains a little explored field. The objective of the ESTRADES project is to combine two new survey methods in order to analyse discrimination in higher education in France in depth, focusing on the point of view of student populations. The project covers the two criteria of discrimination most covered in other fields: gender and ethno-racial origin. Teachers' behaviours will be studied by the GEODE team of the FR TEPP, which will carry out discrimination tests in access to selective Bachelor's or Master's level courses, based on a representative sample covering 1200 courses (WP1). The experience of students will be explored by the ACADISCRI team, supported by a consortium made up of the universities of Paris, Paris Nanterre, Côte d'Azur and the CRIsIS research cooperative, which will carry out victimisation surveys based on exhaustive files of students registered in some fifteen universities (WP2). The combination of a large-scale victimisation survey and a representative discrimination test, carried out by researchers from different disciplines, to tackle the same subject, discrimination, opens up academic perspectives of great interest. After having analysed the scope and limits of the two approaches from a methodological point of view, the databases will be linked statistically in order to study their coherence and complementary qualitative investigations will be carried out in order to deepen the analysis (WP3). The system is designed to be repeated over time and the ANR is requested to finance the first three years of its deployment.
