Detecting FISHeries productivity trajectories AT-RISK to abrupt collapse – FISHATRISK

Submission summary

Fisheries contribute significantly to human nutrition and the economies of coastal populations. But fisheries are heavily exploited at a global scale occasionally leading to abrupt stock collapses. Thus, evaluating a fishery's risk-to collapse is paramount for the sustainable management of such complex socio-ecological systems as fisheries. This proposal aims to develop a dynamical pattern-based approach for assessing the risk-to collapse in current and future productivity trajectories in global fisheries by 1) classifying dynamical patterns in global fisheries productivity; 2) understanding the drivers of dynamical patterns of global fisheries productivity; and 3) detecting fisheries productivity trajectories at-risk-to collapse. Ultimate goal is to build a web-based risk-assessment tool co-designed and oriented to fisheries managers and fisheries scientists. In that sense, this project offers useful, relevant and needed tools for human-managed production systems under stress.
