Unravelling CRK mechanisms in Wheat resIstance To zymoseptoria Tritici – WITT
Receptor-like kinases represent one of the largest gene family involved in plant resistance to pathogens. Recently we cloned Stb16q, the first monocotyledon cysteine-rich receptor-like protein kinase (CRK), which confers resistance to fungal pathogen. This result emphasizes the importance of analysing this understudied gene family in plant immunity. The aim of the WITT project is to unravel Stb16q mechanism in wheat resistance to the devastating fungus Z. tritici. We will identify signal perceived by STB16 ectodomains that triggers resistance either by using biochemical approaches or by studying Stb16q corresponding Z. tritici avirulence gene. Likewise, using targeted omics, we intend to identify Stb16q-specific molecular changes involved in wheat resistance. Finally, we will decipher how the recently occurring virulent isolates bypass Stb16q. Gathering an experienced multidisciplinary consortium, the WITT project will provide an overall view of the CRK mechanism in plant immunity.
