Simulation of PErCutaneoUs Liver tumor Ablation in virtual Reality – SPECULAR

Submission summary

Radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors has become the preferred procedure for many pa-tients. However, despite their many advantages, these percutaneous procedures require ad-vanced skills from the practitioner, especially for procedures involving soft and mobile organs such as the liver. The objective of this project is to develop a complete training system for these procedures in virtual reality. For this, it is on the one hand, necessary to simulate realistic interactions between the needle and virtual organs interactively and, on the other hand, to reproduce an immersive environment of the operating room. This includes realistic rendering, generation of medical images, and haptic feedback of interactions. The results of this project will accelerate the developement of these alternative approaches and could change the standard of treatment for approaches that are much less traumatic for patients.
