TaRgEting NK cells in post-Ischemic cardiac remodeliNG – TREKING
Based on encouraging pilot data, we hypothesized that a specific subtype of innate lymphoid cells, called NK cells, exerts toxic effects on cardiomyocytes after acute myocardial infarction, promoting the extension of the infarction, deleterious remodeling of the left ventricle and ultimately heart failure. We also hypothesize that the characterization of NK cells in the blood during the acute phase of myocardial infarction could be useful in predicting major cardiovascular effects during the acute event. Finally, depletion of NK cells in the acute phase of the infarction would limit the size of necrosis, deleterious remodeling and preserve the contractile function of the left ventricle. We will use experimental and translational approaches to test our pathophysiological hypotheses and develop a novel immuno-modulatory therapeutic approach for ischemic heart disease.
