Role of calprotectin in vascular calcification during chronic kidney disease – CALPROTECT

Vascular calcification associated to chronic kidney disease is a decisive risk factor of cardiovascular mortality. However, treatment options remain limited. In the laboratory, we have recently identified that calprotectin, an alarmin involved in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, could be a key factor in this pathology. The objective of CALPROTECT is to better understand the role of calprotectin in vascular calcification and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of a drug blocking its effects. This project is of extraordinary medical importance as it will improve the management of vascular calcification and thus reduce the mortality of patients with chronic kidney disease.
