Ferroelectric field-effects in exfoliated infinite-layer nickelates – Foxies

Submission summary

The quest for a Ni-based analogous of cuprate high-Tc superconductors has reached a first success: Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 thin films obtained after topotactic reduction of the perovskite Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 have been found to host superconductivity below 15 K. Foxies aspires to establish a promising experimental method to achieve an electric-field control of such a superconducting state. Both theoretical and first experimental observations point towards an unusual role for the Ni 3dz² orbitals due to the Nd interlayer coupling, in addition to the Ni 3dx²-y² orbital of the NiO2 square planar geometry. Foxies aspires to use ferroelectrically-induced polar distortions as a knob to tune the Ni-Nd hybridization in infinite-layer nickelates by altering the Ni 3dz²/3dx²-y² hierarchy. The challenge presupposes to gain control over the transfer process of exfoliated (Nd,Sr)NiO2 infinite-layer thin films onto ferroelectric single crystals.
