Reactive Electro-Mixing: micro- and macro-reactors combination involving Synergies with simultaneous multiple electro-processes – REMixSyn

Submission summary

The vision of the electrochemical cell has not drastically changed for two centuries, in a way that static electrodes (or semi-static in rotating disk and cylinder systems) are either immersed in electrolyte while the solution is likely stirred for better homogenization or pumped in between or through the electrodes. This project intends to induce a paradigm shift in the vision of the design that will have tremendous positive impacts by setting the whole electrochemical cells in motion in the media and the transport phenomena occurring in the electrolyte are induced by the rotation in space of the flow-through electrochemical microcells employed as a blade. The synergy of combination between micro- and macro-reactors will be studied by predicting the influence of angular momentum and asymmetric electrode configuration using porous and non-porous electrode materials on the electrode surface properties, transport phenomena and efficiency of simultaneous multiple electroprocesses. Five tasks will be performed during the 48 months project:
1) Conception, design and instrumentation of reactive electro-mixing reactor
2) Mass transport characterization
3) Properties at electrode/electrolyte interface
4) Efficiency studies of single heterogeneous or homogeneous (electro)-chemical processes
5) Efficiency studies of simultaneous multiple (electro)-chemical processes in a polyphasic system
1 post-doc, 1 engineer and 4 MSc student will assist Dr Mousset (coordinator) do perform the experimental parts in parallel to mechanistic studies, modeling and simulation.
