Artificial Intelligence for Care – ArtIC

The eminent 19th century physician William Osler once said that “the good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” But for most of the 20th century, the medical community generally treated the individual as a collection of symptoms, rather than treating the patient as an individual. This was aggravated by the evolution of the healthcare delivery system, which fragmented patient care and has led to an uncontrollable increase in health expenditure. Digital health and AI hold the potential to make Dr. Osler’s vision of patient-centered care come to life with better use of resources. Digital health and AI tools have a vast potential for improving our ability to prevent, accurately diagnose and treat disease, making medical care truly patient centric, i.e., leading to Personalized Medicine.

University of Strasbourg and its partners are developing interdisciplinary research in Artificial Intelligence, fully dedicated to healthcare and personalized medicine within the medical campus. The Artificial Intelligence for Care (ArtIC) program will allow for selecting, training, and retaining the best students in the field while providing the different PIs with the most innovative human resource. The proposed group of PI’s (39 experts) that will supervise the ArtIC Ph.D. students will bring together stakeholders from Data Science, AI, Robotics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Medical, Social and Human Science to face challenges of Big Data and offer new opportunities for the analysis, monitoring, acting and knowledge generation in Healthcare. Because the ArtIC program includes Hospital and medical institutions, immediate access to an unprecedented healthcare dataset through a large anonymized data warehouse located on the medical campus will be available.
