Recession Employment and Discrimination – RED

Submission summary

The purpose of the RED research project is to measure the effects of the economic recession and the employment crisis, in the context of the covid 19 pandemic, on hiring discrimination in the labour market. For the most vulnerable social groups - who are already the most affected in their living conditions by the economic repercussions of the health crisis - the hypothesis of a counter-cyclicality of discrimination, if verified, would have socially dramatic consequences.
This project is in response to the ANR's call for "Covid-19 Action Research" which aims "to support priority research work that requires immediate funding". The need for funding is linked to an exceptional collection of correspondence test data in the context of a pandemic. The first part of the exceptional data collection (RED 1) began in March and is currently the subject of a grant application to the DARES. We wish to continue this exceptional data collection (RED 2) in the fall (September-October) and then statistically analyse all the data collected. This is the purpose of this application. This exceptional data collection extends three waves of tests carried out since 2015 on behalf of DGAFP, French Economics and Finance Ministry, (DESPERADO project), making it possible to benefit from a single longitudinal measurement of the evolution of discrimination on the labour market, in a period of job recovery and then in the contraction period that began with the lock down.
