Metallic alloys are essential as structural materials for many industrial applications. For such applications, the unwanted compromise between mechanical strength and ductility as well as low damage resistance are scientific and technological barrier. In line with challenge B3 “Industrial renewal”, the goal of the CAMEL project is to overcome this barrier. To do so, fluctuations of chemical composition are proposed as a new strengthening mechanism. The objectives are to assess the efficiency of composition fluctuations as a new strengthening mechanism and to identify and optimize the microstructural parameters which control it. To demonstrate the concept, composition fluctuations will be applied to high entropy alloys (HEA). We propose a multi-scale experimental approach combined with a macroscopic simulation of mechanical properties. It is based on 4 tasks: processing of alloys; multi-scale characterization; mechanical testing; mechanical simulation and optimization of properties.

This project is expected to identify one or two chemically architectured alloys with a better combination of mechanical strength, ductility and damage resistance than any existing alloys. A mechanical simulation tool will also be developed and will permit to fasten product development for future industrial applications. Finally this project should convert the promising properties of HEA into a serious candidate for industrial use.

The project coordinator (chargée recherche, Institut de Chimie et des Matériaux de Paris Est, CNRS-UPEC, UMR 7182) will lead the CAMEL project, in collaboration with one partner (Centre des Matériaux, Mines ParisTech-CNRS, UMR 7633). The project duration will be of 36 months. The project will start on 01/10/2018 and will end on 30/09/2021. The total requested grant is 285 k€ (overheads included). Among other things, it is planned to fund two post-doctoral fellowships.
