Terrorism, Radicalization and Government Policy in MENA (TMENA2) – TMENA2
This proposal makes a strong case for the research into the dynamics and drivers of radicalism and highlights the relevance of this research to European countries. It also shows awareness of wide range of sophisticated methodologies and datasets and the intention to use these techniques in the analysis of the different angles of the project. Recent events in Middle East and North Africa accompanied by refugee flows affected social and economic life in Europe. They have also fueled political debates about the roots and effects of violence and radicalization. This project will enhance knowledge about terrorism emergence and consequences and suggest policies to reduce violence. Our team possesses substantial experience on this theme thanks to the 2015-2017 TMENA project. We will investigate the functioning of terrorist or violent organizations, the factors of citizen mobilization, the role of new cyber technologies and national government policies in these processes. Major evidence based on big data and sophisticated econometric analyses will be presented on the MENA region during its period of transition, social unrest and instability. The proximity of MENA to Europe justifies investigating the repercussions of MENA radical events in order to reduce security risks for European residents.
