Submission summary

The project Around a 2D Map focuses on the design, development and evaluation of interaction techniques for collaboratively manipulating 2D and 3D data displayed on an horizontal or vertical surface. The project focuses on the most common usage situation: a 2D map displayed on an horizontal or vertical surface to provide a common reference to the users and multiple interactive surfaces/devices employed by the users for exploring and modifying the 2D/3D data linked to the 2D map. The project aims at a continuous and fluid interaction between users as well as between the users and an environment that includes a large set of 2D/3D data and multiple connected interactive devices. The project Around a 2D Map therefore focuses on multi-surface, multimodal and collaborative interaction techniques while providing the technologies for exchanging information and for connecting multiple interactive devices in the context of two use cases: architectural project review and public mediation of a space, a university campus.
The key motivation of the project Around a 2D Map is that usage situations with multiple displays and interactive surfaces/devices exist in many application domains, without an efficient and easy to use solution for exchanging information and expertise among users. While several focused research studies exist, the innovative aspect of the research is to focus on the transitions between input/output modalities used by multiple users in order to define a fluid interactive environment.
The project Around a 2D Map, with its scientific objectives and their application to two use cases managed by the industrial partner will enable the integration of multiple interactive devices towards a fluid interaction, will optimize the usability of such multi-surface, multimodal and collaborative environments and thus will accelerate the large adoption of such interactive environments in the context of professional or general public usage situations.
