Géoarchéologie et mobilité des paléo-environnements des ports antiques en Méditerranée – PALEOMED
With reference to two main study sites, lake Mariut (Egypt) and Malta, PaleoMed's main goal is to characterise and quantify human-society relationships in the Mediterranean, at various spatial and temporal scales. The project will adopt a multidisciplinary research approach at the intersection between geography, archaeology, history, geology and marine biology. We aim to use sedimentary archives from the sites to reconstruct the evolution of the four areas; a multi-proxy research approach will be used to generate high-resolution sedimentological, biological (marine macrofauna, ostracods, pollen), geochemical and numerical model datasets. It is the first time that such a high-resolution study of source to sink areas has been proposed. Research at the sites will focus upon three areas: (1) geoarchaeology of Mediterranean coastlines during the Holocene; (2) RSL mobility during the past 6000 years; and (3) the identification and protection of coastal heritages to preserve for the future
