Results of the second ANR FLASH call "Great Tohoku Earthquake"

Nine French-Japanese proposals have been selected within the framework of the ANR Flash (*) call "Great Tohoku Earthquake". This call had been open from June 17th to July 18th, 2011, following the major earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11th March 2011; it was coordinated with the JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) in order to strengthen the French-Japanese cooperation on those fields. The French scientific community did react very positively, with 33 proposals submitted.

The final selection results from the confrontation between both ANR and JST evaluations. The nine selected projects deal with Earth sciences, environmental and societal impact, Engineering sciences, crises management, interaction between natural and technological hazards, resilience and reconstruction. As specified in the call, the ANR funding to French partners amounts to about 100 000€ per proposal, i.e. almost up to 900 000€ in total. Japanese partners will receive up to 50 000€ per project from the JST. The projects will start in October for 18 months, till March 2013.

(*) The "Flash" call category, which had been initiated for the Haiti earthquake in 2010, was created to promote urgent research activity related to a major event. This call type allows for the selection and financing of research projects in a shorter period of time (3 to 4 months) without infringing the basic principles of the agency (competitive call for proposals, peer review, ISO 9001 certified process). The aim is to support immediate research and investigations requiring the acquisition of information and rare data that would not be possible to acquire in common situations. It aims at promoting the production of new scientific results related to an exceptionally rare and large-scale event.
