Preliminary announcement: Call for Franco-American Projects PIRE Slated for Late July

ANR has joined up with the American National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund French teams jointly selected by France and the US under the NSF’s Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) call for proposals. ANR plans to launch a call for proposals dedicated to said collaboration in July.

The multidisciplinary PIRE programme backs American researchers in their commitments to global collaborations whose scientific excellence enables the combined promotion of research and education.

The PIRE call for proposals, as set out in the NSF’s 16-571 solicitation, will be carried out across two phases:

  • Pre-proposal submission phase deadline: 14 September 2016
  • Full proposal submission phase deadline: 24 April 2017

The ANR call for proposals detailing said collaboration’s objectives and specific provisions is currently being drafted. Publication is scheduled for late July 2016.

Eligibility conditions for French partners:

  • Only projects involving a Franco-American bi-national collaboration are eligible for the call for proposals “PIRE-ANR”. Multinational proposals including French and American partners as well as partners from other countries will not be eligible for ANR funding.
  • Only the French partners involved in "PIRE” projects selected during the NSF’s first phase will be eligible under this ANR-NSF joint call.

The following themes are eligible for ANR-NSF co-funding:

  1. Materials, physics, chemistry
  2. Engineering
  3. Energy
  4. The development of nanotechnologies information and communication technologies (including cyberphysical systems)

Maximum project length is five years for NSF and four for ANR. Each agency will cover expenditures for their respective country’s teams according to individual agencies’ rules and regulations.

Please note: NSF reserves the right to fund projects regardless of the presence of ANR funding.
