Historians have refined this “major crisis of the third century” and stressed the fact that regional situations differed strongly in the Provinces. In Egypt, signs of crisis, including environmental aspects, occur from the beginning of the third century all the way to the sixth century AD.The border region of the Great Oasis (Dakhla and Kharga) serves as an indicator.

Non-Alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) with a 25% worldwide prevalence are leading causes of liver-related morbidity and mortality. Chronic inflammation (NASH) and associated fibrosis are the progressive forms of NAFLD and no pharmacological treatment is yet available. We will investigate how the extracellular matrix and its receptors play a key role in orchestrating chronic inflammation and fibrosis contributing to NAFLD progression.

Pollutants are everywhere in the environment and many of these contaminants can reach placenta after exposure during the pregnancy. The overall aim of this project is to address the effects at cellular and molecular levels of pollutants like nanoceria and benzo-(a)-pyrene, and of their mixture, on human placental development and functions. The long-term aim is to characterize the consequences of pregnant women exposure to these pollutants on pregnancy outcome to reveal biomarkers of exposure.
