45 funding organizations coming from 33 countries are joining this call cofunded by the European Commission*: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy (incl. Province of Bolzano/Bozen), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Portugal (incl. the Azores), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Tunisia and Turkey.
* Please note that co-funding by the European Commission (and possibly other funders) is pending on the signature of a Grant Agreement with the European Commission
This call is an opportunity to advance knowledge and inform more effective and integrative biodiversity management by enhancing the scientific underpinnings of biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
- It aims to support transnational research projects (3-years duration) focusing on measures regarding protected areas (including nationally designated protected areas), integrated area-based conservation measures reconciling conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services (including in landscapes and seascapes used to produce food and fiber), as well as measures contributing to effectively protecting species in the wild.
- The call covers all environments, i.e. terrestrial, freshwater and marine. It also covers research on biodiversity conservation in the Outermost Regions (ORs) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) of the EU.
- It is based on three non-exclusive themes :
- THEME 1 – Knowledge for identifying priority conservation areas, establishing effective and resilient ecological networks, enhancing species-based protection and preserving genetic diversity
- THEME 2 – Multiple benefits and costs of biodiversity and ecosystem protection: synergies and trade-offs
- THEME 3 – Effective management and equitable governance to deliver bold conservation outcomes
- THEME 1 – Knowledge for identifying priority conservation areas, establishing effective and resilient ecological networks, enhancing species-based protection and preserving genetic diversity
Projects combining two or three different themes are encouraged.
This call focuses on the biodiversity protection in the wild. It does not imply, for instance, efforts made to restore habitats or species or ex-situ conservation.
Only the international projects will be funded: each consortium will have to include teams coming from at least three different countries participating to the call (including at least two member states or associated countries coming from the European Union).
The overall budget of the call is of more than €40 million. ANR will contribute to the call with a maximum budget of €2 million.
The evaluation and selection of projects will be conducted by integrating other countries in the frame of an evaluation process by peers, based on the scientific excellence criteria but also the political/societal pertinence of the project and stakeholders’ engagement.
Although the applications are submitted jointly by research partners coming from different countries, each partner will be funded by its own national or regional funding organism. French applicants are thus submitted to the ANR eligibility rules. We consequently invite you to read carefully the « Rules for participation for partners applying for ANR’s funding » and the agency’s financial rules document.
Pre-proposals and detailed proposals – written in english – must be electronically submitted on the submission platform, EPSS (« Electronical Proposal Submission System »). You will find instructions for the electronical submission on the Biodiversa+ website.

About the European Co-funded Partnership on Biodiversity
In a context of biodiversity loss, research funding organisations collaborate together on this major societal challenge under the European Biodiversity Partnership (officially starting in October 2021 as the successor of BiodivERsA). With the support of the European Commission, and in the framework of Horizon Europe, the main goal of this initiative is to initiate and promote a transnational network for biodiversity, by identifying the strategic main issues, and promoting the funding of a research of quality at the international scale.
Consult the upcoming and current calls of the appelsprojetsrecherche.fr portal
The appelsprojetsrecherche.fr portal centralises all information on calls for proposals and calls for applications from ADEME, ANR, Inserm including ANRS, Anses and INCa. It provides a simplified access to upcoming and ongoing calls, giving a greater visibility to funding opportunities. Following their closing date, the calls remain published for a few months.
