AquaticPollutants Joint Transnational Call 2020 for proposals on Risks posed to human health and the environment by pollutants and pathogens present in water resources
The call will support research and innovation projects that establish integrated and cross-sectoral approaches for risk-management combining the research areas of contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs), pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. The whole water cycle, from the source through the river basins and eventually to the estuaries and oceans, has to be considered. Micro-plastics will not be subject to the call.
There are still major risks associated with the occurrence of emerging contaminants, pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in our water bodies and oceans. To face these challenges in a comprehensive way and to develop multidisciplinary and practical solutions for the provision of safe drinking water and healthy aquatic environments, this Joint Transnational Call (JTC) aims to bring together the research communities in the freshwater, marine and the health sectors and create synergies for joint approaches.
Proposals submitted under this call must address at least one of the following themes:
- Measuring – Environmental behaviour of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in aquatic ecosystems
- Evaluating – Risk assessment and management of CECs, pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria from aquatic ecosystems (inland, coastal and marine) to human health and environment
- Taking Actions – Strategies to reduce CECs, pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in aquatic ecosystems (inland, coastal and marine)
The budget to implement the Joint Transnational Call for research and innovation projects is about 24M€ (co-funded by the European Commission). The countries participating to the call are : Belgium, Brazil, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden*, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey.
*Some African countries can also apply to the call through the funding of Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Useful information
Only transnational projects consortia will be funded. Each consortium submitting a proposal must involve at least three (3) eligible independent partners coming from three (3) countries listed as EU Member States or H2020 Associated countries in the call document.
Each Funding Partner Organization (FPO) will fund their national partner(s), applicants must thus respect their corresponding national regulations that can be found in the Call Announcement. ANR will exclusively fund French partners of the selected projects.
A Consortium Coordinator can only participate in one proposal (i.e. if the principal investigator is the Consortium Coordinator of a proposal, he/she cannot participate in any other proposal, neither as a Consortium Coordinator nor as a partner).
The involvement of a private company is encouraged but not mandatory. If a non-French private company is involved in a project, it is mandatory to also involve a French private company; otherwise the French partners will be declared ineligible.
Proposals’ eligibility will be verified at two levels:
- a) the general eligibility criteria specific to the Call; and
- b) ANR eligibility rules (see the national regulations).
ALL proposals must conform to the general and national eligibility criteria.
Funding will be awarded for a maximum of three (3) years. The maximum funding for French partners participating in the proposal will be 250 000 € and will be 300 000 € in the case of a French team taking over the coordination of the project.
