The SUNRISE project aims to elucidate the genetic, physiological and molecular basis of drought tolerance in sunflower, with the applied goal to improve crop stability of hybrid sunflowers in the context of climate change.
In 2012, the kick-off meeting started the project. Years 2013 and 2014 were marked by the production of key genomic data such as the sequencing of parental lines involved in SUNRISE genetic populations and the development of two high-throughput genotyping tools. Unique and detailed phenotypic data started to be gathered in field conditions from 2013 up to now on large genetic populations allowing the use of crop modeling to discover genomic regions involved in drought stress tolerance. Molecular and physiological comprehension of drought stress responses was started and proteomic, transcriptomic, and physiological data were successfully produced.
At the same time, bioinformaticians implemented the information system for the tremendous amount of data to be generated in order to host it in a structured way through time and to exchange it between partners.
Year 2015 was marked by the re-deployment of project objectives in order to achieve the first high quality sunflower genomic sequence. This necessary tool was produced using the newest PacBio technology and the project was key in the acquisition of the first PacBio sequencer in France. During 2015, field phenotyping for 2 out of 3 genetic populations were also finalized. The 2015 year was also marked by the creation and the enforcement of a new dissemination roadmap.
The year 2016 was rich in scientific results. 5 publications relating to WP3, 5 and 6 have been published. Other articles are already under review on the exploitation of the reference genome, crop modeling and economical and social studies. The program for phenotyping was very ambitious too with very large field experiments and the partners successfully managed to perform it.
