A radically new perspective for carbon-carbon bond formation – CO2SAM

Submission summary

CO2 utilization is part of the broad strategy to produce fuels and value-added chemicals in a carbon neutral manner. However, the activation and recycling of CO2 as well as the use of CO2-derived functional groups (CO, –CH3, HCOO- etc.), are very challenging notably when performed in late-stage synthesis. While solutions exist for the introduction of CO2-based building blocks on nucleophiles, efficient strategies are still lacking for the functionalization of unreactive sp3-hybridized C–H bonds. In the frame of the CO2SAM project, we aim at developing a radically new approach for carbon-carbon bond formation combining CO2 derived functional groups and novel metalloenzymes. In a more risky part of the project, we will also exploit the unique reactivity of these metallo-enzymes with CO2-derived products, to perform novel reactions currently not accessible by synthetic chemistry. Thus, the CO2SAM project will give access to unprecedented reactions in synthetic chemistry but it will also provide key mechanistic information regarding these novel metallo-enzymes.
