Controlling Self and the Other under Emotional Tension, Resources Restrictions and Stress – Masters

Submission summary

Led by a transdisciplinary consortium (computer sciences, HCI, mechanics, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, physiology, medicine), the MASTERS project aims to develop innovative educational methods dedicated to law enforcement officers. The objective of these methods is to help them maintaining high self-control in all circumstances, including when facing strong constraints and stress (from a psychological or social origin) in difficult dynamic situations. The proposed approach will be based on field studies, and on the design of two virtual environments which will replicate highly socio-emotional situations with personalized scenarios and dynamic adaptation. The first environment will aim to train attentional flexibility while the second one will work on self-control through realistic urban scenes and multimodal interactions with the “other”. These environments, with several configurable characteristics (embodiment of the “other”, levels of difficulty, stressors, multimodal feedbacks…), could be customized according to each learner’s needs thanks to various real time psychophysiological signal recordings. The developed models and the assessment of learning outcomes will be used to improve both existing teaching methods and the design of immersive multimodal and adaptive learning technologies.
