Circuit Electrophysiology of Anxiety – CEA
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental disorders, with a lifetime prevalence of 15-30%. Current treatments remain however insufficient because of their lack of effectiveness. Several studies have highlighted that the amygdala is a key structure involved in anxiety notably through long-range connection with cortical structures. However, to date, the precise functional connectivity, neuronal activity and anatomy of these neuronal circuits mediating anxiety are largely unknown. To address these questions we will develop a translational strategy to evaluate whether amygdala networks activities are engaged in a functional coordination during physiological and pathological anxiety states in humans and rodents. This work will provide a better understanding of the neuronal mechanisms involved in anxiety and will allow the development of novel targeted therapeutical strategies.
