MINES Initiative for Numeric and Data Sciences – MINDS

Submission summary

The MINDS Thesis Program (MINES Initiative for Digital Science and Data) concerns several research centers at MINES ParisTech with strategically research programs on Health, Transportation, Security and Defense and Environment. Although the initiative works to support research in a variety of fields such as fluid mechanics, medical image processing, intensive computing, materials, risk management, Earth observation and renewable energy, etc., it aims to unite existing computational methods with data sciences research initiatives and thus to create interdisciplinary collaborations, ensuring a convergence of HPC and data sciences. In this sense, we also formed solid international collaborations and network with advanced institutions such as the BIDS (Berkeley Institute for Data Sciences), or the Stanford Data Science Initiative (SDSI).
To meet the research challenges brought recently by industrial and societal needs in the areas of health, transport, defense and security and the environment, research centers of MINES ParisTech have chosen to federate in order to consolidate and develop their expertise in the field of data sciences, AI and high performance computing. In addition we aim to take advantage of the synergy - and serendipity - induced by the cross-disciplinary aspects of the involved research centers. It is in this context that the research and development digital platform MINDS was created in 2018 for the convergence of scientific computing and data sciences for the Industry of the Future. It is common to research centers and aims to provide significant IT resources and resources, to aggregate developments and software components, to help and promote the transfer to operational industrial applications, as well as to create a community of researchers and digital engineers.
The thesis program MINDS builds on this existing platform to consolidate and to further develop the capacity and research offers of MINES ParisTech on the predictive sciences for the industry of the future. With its supervisory team of 10 faculty-researchers and their teams, the program provides ten doctoral contracts. The topics of these thesis are reinforced by the idea to seek disruption and innovation in the convergence between HPC, data science and AI applied to topics of strategic areas such as renewable energies, seismic data processing, aerothermics and aerodynamics, biomedical imaging, extreme situations engineering, among others.
The additional co-financing of these doctoral contracts will be based on the MINES’ own resources, which consist of (1) the financial support of the private partners of the platform MINDS, (2) the financing provided by the partnership activities and projects on which are invested our researchers and (3) the classic doctoral contracts of the institution.
