Contribution of digital tools to handwriting research and learning to write in France and Quebec – NUMEC

Submission summary

Coming under the third topic (“SSH research in the digital era”) of the joint call for proposals, the present project is intended to (i) improve and combine digital tools for the study of handwriting, in order to (ii) probe the development of graphomotor skills in children attending schools in France or Quebec (countries with different curriculums) and the way this affects their spelling scores. We will examine the handwriting performances of typical schoolchildren writing in either cursive (France) or manuscript (Quebec), using tools that digitally record posture, the handwriting process and/or product, and the uptake of visual information. The choice of tools and measures will be determined by the children’s grade level and the aspects we want to study. Participants’ handwriting and spelling performances will be assessed in kindergarten, and again in the first and second years of primary school key points at which major differences can be observed between France and Quebec in the teaching of handwriting. To process the digital data we collect (big data situation), we will develop algorithms for identifying relevant patterns. A prime example of how digital technology can contribute to research, our project will therefore involve close cooperation between SSH researchers and their colleagues working in the fields of mathematics and IT. We expect it to bring technological benefits for SSH research (digitizing the act of writing, optimizrf signal processing), but also societal ones (recommendations for improving the teaching of handwriting in France and Quebec, new ways of harnessing digital technology to assess handwriting skills).
