Nitroxide Mediated PhotoPolymerization – NMP2

Submission summary

The present project deals with the use of Alkoxyamines as photoinitiator and mediator for the control of radical polymerization processes. These compounds correspond to the key molecules in Nitroxide Mediated Polymerization (NMP) i.e. by thermal activation both the initiation and control processes occur. The aim of the present project corresponds to the first use of such structures for photochemical polymerization processes. The initiation and the control (dissociation of dormant species) reactions will be trigged by light irradiation. By this approach, with the development of the Nitroxide Mediated PhotoPolymerization (NMP2), both the advantages of thermal and photochemical modes for Controlled Radical Polymerization (CRP) can be obtained (spatial resolution for the polymerization reaction, access to a large range of monomers, fast process..) This work is based on two different labs: Le Département de Photochimie Générale (UMR 7525- Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse - MULHOUSE) and l'équipe de ' Chimie Radicalaire Organique et Polymères de Spécialité ' de l'UMR 6517 (Chimie Biologie et Radicaux libres – Université de Provence MARSEILLE). A high synergy can be expected. Indeed, the first lab has a strong background on the development of photopolymerization processes. This group is particularly well known for the proposition of new photoinitiating systems. On the other hand, the second group (l'équipe de ' chimie radicalaire organique et polymères de spécialité ') has also a perfect knowledge of the basis mechanism for NMP and has already developed a large scale of mediators for this CRP technique. This project represents the first development of the NMP in the photochemical mode.
