Flagships: 19 transnational projects selected for first FLAG-ERA call

Garnering participation from nearly every country in Europe, the ERA-NET “FLAG-ERA” was conceived to support the European Commission Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme’s two “Flagship” initiatives: the Graphene project and the Human Brain Project (HBP). Nineteen transnational projects have been selected and shall be allocated €13.5 M through the ERA-NET’s first call for proposals.

Backed by the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme, FLAG-ERA places 38 regional and national funding structures spread throughout 26 European countries under ANR coordination. FLAG-ERA, whose purpose is to contribute to building out Graphene and the Human Brain Project (see below), launched its first call for proposals in late 2014 with the dual purpose of incorporating new researchers in the Flagships and funding current member teams. The FLAG-ERA call, counting 14 funder countries for the Graphene component and 11 for the Human Brain Project, called upon scientific communities from industry and academia to form transnational consortia with a view to putting forth topically related projects. One hundred and eight proposals were received, 78 under Graphene and 30 under HBP.

A competitive peer review selection process carried out by an independent international panel drawing on external peer reviews culminated in the selection of 19 projects for an overall funding of €13.5 M, with thirteen projects falling under Flagship Graphene and six under the Human Brain Project.

New teams brought on board as associate members will enable Flagships to benefit from the support of an even broader panel of experts, potentially opening up new research areas and driving forward flagship research.

«FET Flagship» projects

The unprecedentedly wide-scoped “Flagship initiatives” were selected by the European Commission following a European competition on future and emerging technologies (FET). The Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project (HBP) are each to be funded through a billion-euro endowment made available by the European Commission and national partners (States, universities, private sector) over ten years. Rallying a large number of European research teams, including French teams, these heavily funded initiatives are designed to put Europe on the leading edge of research in highly innovative fields. The Graphene project aims to accelerate the development and commercialising of applications for promising graphene-based materials. The Human Brain Project (HBP) aims to develop a model simulating the human brain using a super calculator.

What is an ERA-NET ?

ERA-NETs, or research and funding networks supported by the European Commission, are mechanisms designed to develop and strengthen national research programmes. ERA-NETs contribute to the construction of the European Research Area. ERA-NET partners devote know-how, as well as human and funding resources to joint activities, such as calls for international research proposals on specific themes. Project selection is based on a European-wide competitive peer review process. Each partner funds its respective national teams.
