Impact of climate change on forest reproduction and regeneration – FOREPRO
Providing robust projections of forest dynamics in the future requires predicting how climate change and societal decisions will affect not only fruiting dynamics (masting), but also the demography of seed-consumers and their effect on forest regeneration.
Social Transformation in South African Science and Innovation – STIS
This project investigates the integration of excluded groups into social collectives, with an empirical focus on the racial transformation of the South African science system. It addresses an attempt to accelerate changes in response to decades of systematic denial of opportunity to particular groups in society.
Cooperative Catalysis Between Metal Single Atoms and Nanoparticles – COMET
Single metal atoms can be present in many supported catalysts (including commercial ones) in combination with metal particles, and have certainly played a role in many catalytic processes, but they have rarely been recognized as active sites. The project aims to develop a new generation of catalysts, combining in a controlled manner isolated atoms and metallic particles, in order to achieve cooperative catalysis.
Development of a “scintronic" crystal for very fast timing gamma ray imaging applications – ClearMind
We propose to develop a position-sensitive detector consisting of a scintillating crystal on which a photocathode is directly deposited. The photocathode has a refractive index larger than the refractive index of the crystal. This “scintronic” crystal optimizes the transmission of scintillation and Cherenkov photons to the photocathode without the use of optical grease. Such device avoids loss of optical photons at photocathode due to the total internal reflection at large angles of incidence.
Reconstructing regional BuRnt Areas from microcharcoal preserved In marine SEdiments – BRAISE
The future evolution of fire activity remains highly uncertain, as fire is a complex process to model. It is necessary to evaluate the performance of fire models outside of current climatic conditions. Records of paleofires from marine sedimentary archives offer this possibility. However, comparisons between models and data remain limited, as there are not yet common units between these two types of data.
Efficient and sustainable glass surfaces for pharmacy – HEALTHYGLASS
Despite the strong inertness of primary glass packaging against medicinal drugs and excipient solutions, the challenge of protecting the container from the active molecule and excipient solution that is to be stored still remains. Interactions of reactive excipient solutions with the drug container can alter the glass surface and even produce glass flakes through delamination that causes storage and great sanitary concerns, especially in the case of substances administered intravenously.
Optimization of Urban Synchromodal Systems – OPUSS
Last mile delivery concerns the last stage of a transport system, from wholesale transport to the delivery to final customers. Because of its synchromodal aspect (several modes of transport subject to synchronization constraints), it is the nightmare of logisticians, especially in urban areas. This project aims at designing advanced optimization algorithms to plan transports in such synchromodal networks.
Solar thermochemical conversion of CO2 and water into fuel using non-stoichiometric oxygen-exchange redox materials – SUNFUEL
The diminution of greenhouse gas emissions from intense utilization of fossil resources requires developing novel sustainable and environmentally-friendly processes. The SUNFUEL project aims to develop an innovative solar process for both hydrogen production from water-splitting and CO2 valorization.
Impact of Prolonged Nicotine Exposure on the Adolescent and Adult Brain with Relevance for Psychiatric Disorders – NICADO
Nicotine addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder associated with psychiatric comorbidities. The prognosis is notably bleak for most of adult smokers who began in adolescence, as early onset of nicotine use is associated with an increased risk of dependence throughout the lifetime. Vaping has emerged as an alternative nicotine delivery method immensely popular especially amongst adolescents. These increases in adolescent nicotine use stress the need for effective evidence-based interventions.
