Greener thickener in cosmetic formulation: synthesis, properties and applications for topical uses – BioCOCO

Submission summary

Nowadays, soft colloids used in cosmetic formulation are often oil-based additives, while their effects on environment are not fully understand, their long reminiscence due to their poor biodegradability could be harmful for nature. An alternative is the use of bio-based additives, which are sustainable and biodegradable. The objective of this project is to design an innovative biodegradable and Bio-based soft Colloids for Cosmetics formulations (BioCoCo), based on a bio-based synthon (itaconic acid), to thoroughly investigate their properties in water, and to correlate them to application for topical uses. Synthesis part will develop greener radical polymerization in bulk by reactive extrusion, using new bio-based initiator. Then, bio soft colloids will be characterized in term of structure and rheology and properties for applications will be tested. Finally, we aim to control the biodegradability and life cycle analysis of our bio-based soft colloids.
