Résumé

The French Infrastructure for Integrated Structural Biology (FRISBI) was created in May 2011 to set up high-end instrumentation in structural biology and make it available to the French and European, academic and private scientific communities. FRISBI is a distributed infrastructure comprising five centres (Strasbourg, Grenoble, Montpellier, Marseille and Paris-Saclay) open since June 2012 for project-based access to cutting-edge instruments and know-how for structural biology; this includes sample preparation and characterization, spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, NMR and electron microscopy.

Access is open via the FRISBI website (frisbi.eu) and projects are selected according to technical feasibility, scientific impact and availability of resources.

Since the opening of FRISBI, around 10500 user access projects have been performed. Since 2015, FRISBI has established an annual funded access call to contribute towards the costs of user projects. Thanks to the extension of FRISBI funding a seventh funded access call was opened in 2021. FRISBI also has an important role in training, around 3000 users were trained on FRISBI platforms. Also, FRISBI played a central role in launching the first French National training school in structural biology (ReNaFoBis) and through co-organisation of courses, scientific workshops have established relationships with other national and European infrastructures.

FRISBI is an active participant in the interINSB “club” and participates in the different working groups implemented (WG couts complets et tarif, communication, structure de gouvernance et relation avec l’industrie).

Also, FRISBI coordinates national roadmaps to implement new technologies, reinforces the technology transfer between academic research groups and industry for technological developments, biotechnology and therapeutic applications.

FRISBI has become a driving force in France and beyond in integrated structural biology and therefore needs long term support.
