Thermoplastic Net-Shaping of Low-Density and Biocompatible Ti-based Metallic Glasses for Dental Implants – TNT
The aim here is to develop new shades for dental implants in order to achieve better strength properties but also to study the influence of surface texture on integration into the human body. This may lead to an improvement in the lifetime of the implants.
Galen in Arabic. More than a translation. – GAIA
“Galen in Arabic – More than a Translation” aims at investigating the crosspollinations between three intellectual strands of the Islamicate world in the 9th and 10th centuries: the reception of the Greek medical tradition as expressed in the writings pertaining to the Galenic tradition, early Arabic philosophy (falsafa) and early Islamic theology (kalam). Our hypothesis is that the intellectual debates that took place within the Islamicate world impacted the reception of this tradition.
Cybergenetic circuits to test composability of gene networks – CyberCircuits
Quantitative and synthetic biology live in a state of quiet denial: while the analogy of genetic to electronic circuits is commonly invoked and depicted, we routinely fail to make correct predictions about network dynamics from “known” properties of the network’s components. We aim to develop novel approaches for understaning and cosntructing synthetic circuits based on hybrid bio-digital citcuits implemented partially in cells and partially in computers.
Material Culture of Babylonia during the 1st millenium B.C. – MCB
The rich textual data from the Neo-Babylonian Empire in the 6th century BC illustrates processes of manufacturing of artefacts which have not been preserved in their archaeological context. This body of virtual data is exceptional for such an early period. The textual data can be cross-referenced with preserved archaeological data to understand the identity and techniques of those who made them, and how furniture and tools were used.
Methods for discovering SNP Combinations Associated with a PHEnotype, from genome-wide data – SCAPHE
Genomic differences explain in great part why patients experience disease differently. However, current methods to discover associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a phenotype account for little of these differences. SCAPHE builds on the hypothesis that this is due to the effect of non-additive interactions between SNPs, together with a lack of robustness stemming from the relatively small sample sizes, which can be alleviated by integrating biological networks.
Transcriptional signatures for global RNA-seq analysis – Transipedia
The expression of genes produces an infinite diversity of transcripts. Finding and quantifying these transcripts in the immense repositories of sequences that accumulate in the world is currently an impossible task. We propose here for the first time a solution to this problem, via a new structure for indexing massive sequences. This tool opens up unique perspectives in biology and health.
Systematic functional analysis of mitochondrial dynamics in healthy young, aged and sarcopenic muscle – MITO-DYNAMICS
In the MITO-DYNAMICS project, we aim to identify mitochondrial processes and their regulators responsible for muscle wasting (sarcopenia) during ageing and in disease conditions.
We proposed a systematic and quantitative approach to understand the molecular, morphological and physiological dynamics of mitochondria comparing young, old and sarcopenic muscles of mice and flies. This will be complemented by the development of an integrative analysis platform, mitoXplorer.
Human and Animal NUmerical Models for the crANio-spinal system – HANUMAN
The main purpose of the HANUMAN project is to provide numerical models for human and non human primates. In particular, we will develop models
taking into account intracranial Pressure (ICP) versus arterial, venous and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows oscillations in a realistic anatomical
craniospinal system developed from images acquired on human and marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), primate with a phylogenetical proximity to humans and usually used in preclinical studies.
