Science with and for society: the selected projects of ANR’s first SAPS call for proposals, “Scientific mediation and communication”

Strengthening the interactions between science, research and society is a key priority requiring a better understanding of the practices used and the development of innovative tools and mechanisms. This is why, as part of a multi-year SAPS (science with and for society) programme dedicated to promoting scientific, technical and industrial culture (CSTI), the French National Research Agency (ANR) launched an initial Research-Action call for proposals at the end of July 2021 on the theme “Scientific mediation and communication”.

The call is based on the insight that there is a need for scientifically defined criteria making it possible to analyse and evaluate the impact of mediation and communication initiatives aimed at target groups; recognise the constituent elements involved in planning these activities effectively; identify favourable factors and obstacles; and develop potential solutions. The call was aimed at researchers already involved in scientific work in this field or wishing to develop new directions for research on this theme.

Following the evaluation process, 15 projects were selected for total ANR funding of €1.161 million, out of the 56 eligible proposals submitted for the call. The selection rate for the call is thus 26.8%.

The SAPS multi-year programme of calls for proposals

The call for expressions of interest issued at the end of February 2021 generated an exceptional response, involving scientific communities and CSTI players and covering a wide diversity of themes. Following this call, ANR initiated a multi-year programme of SAPS calls for proposals in two sections.

The first section, “Research-Action”, includes several themed calls aiming to support research projects with a strong focus on applications (implementing solutions). These projects can last 12 to 24 months. The maximum grant is €80k per project.

The second section, “Mobilising researchers for CSTI and scientific mediation”, includes several calls for project coordinators who have already been selected for the 2018 to 2022 Generic Call for Proposals (AAPG). The goal is to award them additional funding for them to develop their research work, designing and conducting their initiatives in partnership with local, regional and national organisations focusing on scientific culture (CSTI centres, university cultural departments, museums, cultural stakeholders etc.).
