High-level Conference "Unlocking the Power of Science Communication in Research and Policy Making: Connecting research, government, industry, and society", 12–13 March 2024, Brussels

Under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) and Science Europe are co-organising a conference in order to highlight the importance of science communication in research processes and raise awareness of the need to address it more formally in research programmes and policy making.

In recent years, researchers have become increasingly involved in public communication programmes; the COVID-19 pandemic and other global challenges have accelerated this trend. Despite this, misinformation and « fake news » about important social issues – such as artificial intelligence, big data, food security, energy, and climate change – continue to spread through social and new media. This has led to growing international recognition that science communication is an essential aspect of research culture.

This conference will bring European policy makers and stakeholders together to highlight the importance of open, ethical science communication in research processes. It will also raise awareness of the need to address science communication more formally in research programmes.

During two days, plenary sessions, panel discussions, fireside chats, deep dives and networking possibilities will be held.

March 13th at 09.15, Valérie Fromentin, Head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the French National Research Agency (ANR), will take part in the Panel discussion: « What are the main incentives and barriers to fostering science communication in Europe? » This discussion will focus on identifying the challenges that hinder the promotion of effective science communication and exploring strategies for including science communication in research funding programmes and developing institutional tools such as training and incentives that can foster capacity building and help researchers communicate science more effectively.
