Using hydrogen as a decarbonated energy for propulsion applications – SPEEDYH

Submission summary

Reducing our impact on climate means reducing our consumption of fossil fuels. As a result, the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier is currently seen as an unmissable option. An alternative to fuel cells (FC) and electric vehicles, which massively use rare materials, is the direct injection and combustion of hydrogen, particularly for heavy-duty trucks and gas-turbines. Advantages over FC technology include a higher tolerance to fuel impurities, the flexibility to switch between different fuels, reduced use of rare materials. However, there are a number of practical drawbacks associated with the very low energy density of hydrogen that are key elements in the development of hydrogen technology such as the design rules, NOx production remediated by steam dilution and instabilities linked to thermo-diffusive effects. These open questions will be studied within the project SPEEDYH through development of a detailed kinetic mechanism and experiments associated to numerical simulations.
