Medias 19. Journalistic Practices and Poetics in the 19th Century – MEDIAS19

Submission summary

This project between France and Quebec, entitled “Journalistic Practices and Poetics in the 19th Century: Biographical Inventory, Trajectory Analysis, Writings and Imagination of Writers-Journalists,” aims to study francophone media culture of the Nineteenth Century, specifically from the late 1820s to the First World War. At the heart of this project is the analysis of what journalism is in the Nineteenth Century and what it means to be a “writer-journalist” while France entered the “media age,” a development which also affects Quebec. The intensity of international cultural exchanges between francophone regions in the period under study challenges a strictly national framework for understanding the phenomena in question and their historical transformations. The team, gathered around this general research agenda, proposes three major research objectives:
* Conduct an inventory of journalists and analyze their career paths;
* Deepen the knowledge of the representations of journalism;
* Analyze the poetics of journalism.
These objectives will be pursued through an integrated methodology. This epistemological research will be supported by the implementation of digital resources:
* The launch of the first phase of a dictionary of francophone journalists;
* The online publication of critical editions of works on the press;
* The collection of a scientific bibliography of small French presses (« petite presse ») ;
* The operation of the web site Médias 19 (www.medias19.org ) which will provide a forum for data sharing and publication.
