Summary

The hybrid magnet of LNCMI-Grenoble combines superconducting and resistive technologies in a unique modular platform offering to the scientific community various high magnetic field values and useful warm bore apertures ranging from 43 T/34 mm with 24 MW electrical power down to 9 T/800 mm when the superconducting coil (SC) is used alone. The objectives of LaSUP based on a collaboration with CEA-Saclay are to design, build, install, commission and operate the large SC built from Nb-Ti/Cu and superfluid He technologies as well as the mechanical, electrical and cryogenic infrastructures necessary for operation. Complements to funding were obtained from CNRS, FEDER and region Rhône-Alpes. The total weight of the hybrid magnet is 54 tons with 24 tons to cool down to 1.8 K. The design with detailed studies, the construction and commissioning program, have been thoroughly validated during height technical reviews by a committee of international experts. The assembly line of the conductor for the SC was internalized at LNCMI for the industrial production. The cryogenic plant to produce 150 l/h of liquid He and the power supply with dump resistors to extract up to 86 MJ of stored energy within the SC, were installed. The cryogenic satellite (9 m height, 2.2 m dia., 10 tons), the cryostat (10 m3) and the SC, were produced in industry, delivered and integrated into LNCMI. The electronic components for protection, control and monitor the SC were designed and assembled by CEA and LNCMI before being integrated into LNCMI. Despite the covid-19 crisis, the commissioning of the cryogenic satellite connected to the cryogenic plant was successfully performed in 2020. The integration and final assembly of all equipment were realized and validated with first successful commissioning tests in 2022 and 2023 during which, the SC has been powered up to its nominal magnetic field of 8.5 T. The commissioning will end in 2024 leaving the floor to normal operation for scientific experiments.
