Incas: The first atmosphere polluters in South America?
Until now there has been a consensus of belief in the scientific community that air pollution in the Southern hemisphere began in the industrial period, that is to say less than one hundred years ago. New evidence suggests that it actually dates back to the pre-Columbian civilisations, and to the Incas in particular, who mined Andean copper and silver ores. This important discovery was made by a team of researchers involved in the PARAD project funded by ANR in 2011 through its Young Researchers programme.
JPI OCEANS: Launching of a first international call for proposals in the area of marine environment contaminants
ANR, in collaboration with its European partners, has just launched a brand new international call for proposals on the ecological aspects of microplastics in the marine environment. This call comes under the Joint Programming Initiative "JPI OCEANS". The deadline for submitting projects is 31st March 2015.
Could insects represent an alternative resource for animal feed?
Insects are rich in proteins and fats, and they constitute the basis of the diet of many animals. They have been used in Asian cooking for hundreds of years and today are used by the food industry to produce ingredients that enter into the composition of everyday food products. The cochineal (also known as scale insect or mealybug), for example, produces the natural dye used as a colorant in certain sweets. In a context of increasing scarcity of resources, insects - so far underexploited as a commodity - could be a source of raw materials. This, at least, is the postulate of the Desirable project, which has been funded by ANR since 2013 under its Sustainable Food Systems programme.
LabCom Archipex, working to develop new drug formulations
Continuing a fifteen-year collaboration, the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and IPSEN, a private company, announced the creation of a joint laboratory at the end of 2014. Baptised Archi-pex (from "Peptidic architectures and formulations"), this structure will be supported for three years by ANR through the LabCom instrument.
