The French National Research Agency publishes its 2021 Annual Report
2021: a pivotal year in the history of the ANR
In 2021, through the implementation of the LPR, which provided for a significant increase in funding allocated by the ANR to French research teams, the Agency’s role in the research and innovation ecosystem was reaffirmed and its missions strengthened.
“2021 will go down in the history of the ANR as a crucial year [...] Increasing budgets provide new prospects to support scientific communities.”, explains Thierry Damerval, President and CEO of the ANR.
The increase in the ANR’s operating budget, achieved through the LPR and the French Recovery Plan, helped extend the number of projects funded to 2,291 in 2021, 579 more than in 2020. In this favourable context, the success rate has reached 23.1%, including 22.7% for the Generic call for proposals, and the preciput rate has been increased to 25% in 2021, compared to 19% in 2020, i.e., the amount allocated to institutions going from €100 M to €163 M. Partnership-based research has also received additional support in 2021.
Moreover, as part of its commitments, the ANR rolled out several actions to support and promote the nation’s scientific, technical and industrial culture (CSTI), and better assist scientific communities with the implementation of a single calls for proposals portal. Finally, this year saw the signature of an Objectives and Performance Contract 2021-2025, renewing the confidence pact between the French State and the ANR, and the launch of France 2030, which pursues the commitments of the Investments for the Future Programmes (PIA).
