SEAweeds extracts in SustaInable plant DEfense and bioStimulation – SEASIDES

SEASIDES

SEAweeds extracts in SustaInable plant DEfense and bioStimulation

Project objectives

The objective of LabCom SEASIDES is to use the plant mainly as a screening structure for new solutions for biostimulation and protection of the plant against abiotic and biotic stresses. The bio-ingredients of marine origin will be screened on plants which the laboratory has mastered. They will be selected in on the basis of the needs for new biostimulants and SDP in species of interest for the customers targeted by the company and the market potential.

The LabCom SEASIDES roadmap is divided into 5 research and development axes:
Axis 1: Definition of substances to be tested, plants and methodologies
Axis 2: Extraction and formulation
Axis 3: In vitro screening, help to deepen knowledge about the plant, tests in semi-controlled conditions and evaluation of environmental toxicity
Axis 4: Biochemical and structural characterizations of substances of interest
Axis 5: Industrial development and scientific promotion

Axis 1: Plant models and protocols for demonstrating water stress and screening for biostimulant and SDP activities were selected.

Axis 2: The substances of interest have been the subject of an extraction development.

Axis 3: The protocols for demonstrating water stress and screening for biostimulant and SDP activities are being optimized in in vitro culture and under semi-controlled conditions.

Axis 4: The structure of the polysaccharides derived from certain fractions of interest in the products supplied by the company Algaia was determined by a combination of compositional analyzes, by C13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) and mass spectrometry.

Axis 5: Since its inception, the LabCom SEASIDES has been regularly presented to clients and partners' collaborators during regional, national and international meetings.

The new substances identified as part of the LabCom SEASIDES will be the subject of industrial development (production of active ingredients, development of formulations and conduct of experiments, etc.).
In addition to the applied aspect, the results obtained will also help in the structural and functional characterization of the plant, in particular in its response to abiotic and biotic stresses. As far as possible, these results will be promoted by scientific publications. The valorisation of this fundamental knowledge acquired on the plant will in turn allow the development of new diagnostic tools transferable by the company in the industrial sector in connection with the plant sectors.

The LabCom SEASIDES aims to set up a collaborative research and development structure between the Glyco-MEV laboratory (Glycobiology and Plant Extracellular Matrix - EA4358) at the University of Rouen Normandy and ETI ALGAIA. This LabCom aims to bring together in a structuring project these two partners who have scientific and technological expertise on plant and seaweeds glycomolecules and their uses.
The Glyco-MEV works in plant sciences and a part of researches is focused on structure, biosynthesis and functions of glycopolymers (polysaccharides, glycoproteins and proteoglycans) involved in plant growth, development and plant defense elicitors. This activity is now well recognized in the scientific community thanks to an excellent ranking during its last evaluation by the HCERES and publications in journals with high impact factor. The company ALGAIA is specialized in the production of bio-ingredients of marine origin (in particular glycomolecules such as carrageenans, alginates, fucoïdans, laminarans, ...) produced in a sustainable way for the agricultural, agroalimentary industries, cosmetics and nutraceuticals. It is present in the international market field of these industries.
The two partners have common interests and objectives in understanding and valuing active molecules and glycomolecules. With this project, the two partners aim to find alternative uses of phytosanitary products in order to increase plant resistance to environmental stresses related to new agro-environmental issues. This will be done through tools / approaches of cellular biology, molecular biology and sustainable extraction of marine ingredients.
The LabCom SEASIDES is a real opportunity in terms of partnership skills development in public and private R & D, industrial and scientific impact, employment and training. Its objective is to develop a collaborative, synergistic and innovative scientific activity between the laboratory and the company in order to (i) increase knowledge on marine bio-ingredients, (ii) enhance the fundamental knowledge on plants in the industrial field in connection with plant sectors by developing new diagnostic tools and new plant growth elicitors in response to abiotic and biotic stresses and iii) promoting agroecology in plant production according to ECOPHYTO plans in reducing intensive use of phytosanitary treatments.
