Switchable Mulfunctional Advanced Compounds – SMAC

Submission summary

SMAC is a multidisciplinary project in the field of nanoscience with the objective of designing, synthesizing and studying multifunctional compounds whose magnetic properties or luminescence can be modulated by an external stimulus. The switching effect involved in the present study is essentially based on octacyano-molybdenum compounds and the tungsten equivalents MoZn, MoCu, WZn for which photomagnetic properties have been demonstrated.
The project relies on these magnetic switches with three main objectives: (i) the integration of these entities into complex architectures, notably hetero-tetra and hetero-penta metallic compounds, (ii) the production of multifunctional compounds for which the different properties act in synergy, (iii) a complete physical study to better understand and control the three mechanisms that govern photo-switching properties.

The project is based on extremely promising preliminary results, including MCuTbCo hetero-tetra-metallic complexes (with M= Fe, Co, Mo, W, ...) which exhibit single molecule magnet properties) and luminescent MoCu8-type compounds.
Moreover, the latest results obtained on photoinduced phase transitions have shown the importance of these physical studies for a perfect understanding of the underlying mechanisms, essential information for the development and valorization of photo-switchable molecular materials.
